SEMCO LANDFILL

Landfill - Household Hazardous Waste - Area Recycling Centers - Recyclables Not Allowed in Landfill

CESQG/Treatment & Pricing - Cost, Hours and Rules - Landfill Calendar

Every year Iowans generate approximately 7 pounds of hazardous waste per resident. With a population of over 2.1 million, this adds up to a tremendous amount of hazardous waste.

Products that contain the following chemicals are hazardous: corrosive, explosive, reactive, flammable or toxic. Unfortunately, the absence of the words does not guarantee the product is without hazards. For example, methyl alcohol (found in some glass cleaners) can cause blindness if ingested, but may not require a warning if it makes up less than 4% of a product. Additionally, health effects from long term exposure may not even be considered in the labeling requirements.

Do's
  • Buy less.
  • Buy products in child-proof packaging.
  • Share unused portions with others.
  • Use product according to label instructions.
Don'ts
  • Discard wastes into: drains sewers, regular trash, or onto ground.
  • Reuse containers.
  • Use products that are old or banned.
